What are some of the rewarding aspects of your occupation and career?
It is rewarding to see a happy client at the end of the day. It makes the whole process worth it. It is also a proud feeling to be able to see the project through, right from concept to completion. This field is creative and constantly evolving with innovative materials and technology, keeping it interesting each day.
Why did you choose this career?
Space planning is something that always excited me. I would visualize and reorganize spaces that could be used more efficiently. Interior Design magazines and furniture exhibitions also inspired me and influenced my design sensibilities.
Why did you choose Drexel University’s Westphal College of Media Arts and Design over similar programs?
Drexel’s well-structured curriculum had everything and more that I was looking for. It tapped into the professional, technical, creative and explorative aspects of interior design. The program being CIDA accredited was equally important in this decision.
How did your time at Drexel University’s Westphal College of Media Arts and Design prepare you for your career?
I am working at a residential firm and my transition to this job was smooth with the knowledge and exposure given by Drexel. It gave me a well-rounded experience and drove me to develop my own creative style. It also helped learn the standards of the industry: its code regulations and construction documents. The projects assigned may seem challenging but they are an opportunity to do extensive research and tap into your creativity. I learnt to use different software programs that helped develop and communicate my visualized ideas effectively.
Was our faculty helpful to you in making the transition to a career in interior design? Are you still in contact with them?
The faculty at Drexel are very approachable, supportive and encouraging. I was in contact with a few faculty members who guided me for procuring an internship. Yes, I am in contact with a few.
What advice would you give to someone considering returning to a Master’s program in interior design?
Do all the research you can to be sure you want to get into the industry of Interior Design. The course is intense and can be challenging at times. Being open to feedback will help you grow as a designer. With hard work, passion and determination you will find yourself in a rewarding program.
